The Classical Greek / Roman figures included are Diana the Huntress, Discus Thrower, Nike, Athena Standing, Athena Bust, Venus de Milo and other legendary heroes and gods.
  • Diana the Huntress was originally painted in homage to the beauty of Diane de Poitiers, Henri II's mistress.
  • The Diskobolos (Discus Thrower) pays tribute to athletes from ancient Greek times as the Olympics were an important social tradition. This statue was created ca. 450 BC.
  • Nike is the goddess who personified triumph and victory in Greek Mythology. The Nike of Samothrace was found on the island of Samothrace in the Aegean Sea in 1863 by a French expedition.
  • Athena is the goddess of wisdom, skills and warfare. She is one of the twelve Olympians.
  • Venus de Milo (Aphrodite de Melos) is the Greek / Roman goddess of love. In 1820, a Greek farmer on the Aegean Island of Melos found the Aphrodite broken into pieces and scattered about in a cavern.
